Kate Swaine Nutritionist Glasgow

Meet Kate– Your Guide Towards Optimal Health in Midlife

With nearly two decades of experience in Nutritional Therapy and Functional Medicine, I love to support women to take control of their health through personalised and evidence- based solutions.

I do the work that I do because it is so rewarding to witness women overcome bloating, anxiety, sleep issues and have more energy to live their life to the fullest. Symptoms that perhaps they have put down to their age, stage of life or to “just they way it is”.

If you’re also confused about the first steps to take or wondering if feeling better is even possible for you, then I’d love to invite you for a 15 min chat to explore what we can do together.

You are in safe hands

Many of the clients that come through my clinic doors are confused and overwhelmed from the amount of information out there on what to do for your health and wellbeing. Social media influencers also give out a fair share of misleading, one-size-fits-all information that leave my clients completely confused.

Therefore you might be thinking, why am I the right person to support you in my journey and what are my qualifications to make me suitable to trust with your health?

I’m a qualified Nutritional Therapist, having studied for four years at Patrick Holford’s Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London, where I graduated in 2007. Since then, I’ve worked with over 2000 individuals one-to-one, run cooking classes and weight management groups, and led wellness retreats. But most importantly, I have continued to learn and deepen nutritional knowledge every single year, as the world of nutrition is changing rapidly.

I am also an IFM Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner (IFMCP), so I incorporate the Functional Medicine approach to all of my consultations and work. This means that I take a detective approach to your health, looking beyond symptoms to uncover underlying imbalances. I use advanced functional testing when needed and focus on supporting your body's natural ability to heal through targeted nutrition, lifestyle changes, and evidence-based protocols.

What My Clients Say:

It's amazing how much better you feel when your body is actually hungry and ready to receive food, good food that your body is going to like and respond well too. Yes there are not many carbs in my plan, but I love not feeling sluggish and tired. I used to wonder how the small portions would ever fill me up, but they do. When I finish my meal, I always feel nicely satisfied and full - never bloated.

It's not a diet, it's a way of fuelling your body in a way that your body can respond, and it is sustainable, it's a way of living.  No counting calories, or points, just eating good, healthy food, that my body needs.  Yes I lost some weight, but that wasn't the key focus. I wanted to feel good about food again. Kate is amazing at guiding you through the process and being there to answer any questions.  If you are thinking about trying Metabolic Balance, just do it!
Honestly, you'll never look back.”

My Road to Nutritional Therapy

  • Kate Swaine nutritionist Glasgow

My interest in nutritional therapy began back in 1998, when my mum was diagnosed with cancer. We were introduced to the Penny Brohn Cancer Care Centre in Bristol, where we received practical, compassionate advice on food, nutrition, and wellbeing. I found myself cooking her meals, reading everything I could about nutrients, and unknowingly sowing the seed that would shape the course of my working life.

Around the same time, while studying nutrition (and holding down a full-time job!), I began to struggle with my own health. I wasn’t sleeping, I was constantly exhausted, and I was in persistent pain. Despite countless visits to GPs and consultants, no serious cause was found. I was offered pain-numbing medication and pain management therapy—but deep down, I knew that wasn’t the long-term answer.

Eventually, I began running functional tests on myself—and the results were eye-opening. Despite eating what I thought was a healthy diet, my gut was in poor shape, my nutrient levels were low, and many of my hormones were depleted. In short, I was completely burnt out. It was time to slow down.

With the support of a wonderful nutritionist and an incredible acupuncturist, I made a full recovery over 18 months. The pain I had lived with resolved completely. But the first year was tough. I couldn’t do the things I loved—sport was off the table, socialising was difficult (even sitting on hard chairs was painful), and I needed extra time to finish my nutrition coursework. I was also reacting to all sorts of foods.

Looking back now, it was a challenging but important chapter. It gave me personal insight into the frustration, isolation, and resilience that often come with chronic health conditions—and I carry that understanding into my work with every client I support.

  • Glasgow and Scotland Nutritionist

I spent 12 years living in Edinburgh, but these days you’ll find me just north of Glasgow, where I live with my partner and our whippet, Ellie. I have a soft spot for all dogs—but sighthounds will always have my heart.

A former club swimmer and runner, I’ve always felt at home in the water and out in nature. I’ve taken on some incredible swims, including crossing Lake Windermere (11 miles!) and even swimming from Asia to Europe across the Bosphorus in Istanbul’s annual race.

These days, nothing makes me happier than being up in the hills with Ellie by my side. I’m also one of those rare morning people—yes, we do exist!

Why Work with Me?

I don't believe in generic meal plans or quick fixes. After nearly 20 years in practice, I've learned that your symptoms are your body's way of telling a story—and my job is to listen.

I use Functional Medicine to dig beneath the surface and find out why you're struggling, not just hand you a list of foods to avoid. Together, we'll uncover the root cause and create a plan that actually works for your life.

What My Clients Say:

Kate thought my symptoms were a result of hormonal imbalances and a sluggish liver- I came away with lots of ideas on what to eat and why, and within the first month I noticed an improvement in all my symptoms. My skin was clearer, my headaches were less often and I had tons more energy.”

FAQs on working with Nutritional Therapist Kate:

  • I use a Functional Medicine approach, which means I don’t just look at symptoms but work to uncover the root causes of issues like bloating, fatigue, or hormonal imbalance. Every plan is personalised and evidence-based, not a one-size-fits-all diet.

  • I specialise in supporting women in their 30s, 40s and 50s with gut health, hormones, and energy. However, I also work with others who experience different symptoms at different life stages and want to fully address symptoms they never found solutions to before, using a Functional Medicine approach.

  • Many of my clients come to me with bloating, digestive discomfort, weight changes, anxiety, sleep issues, or low energy. These are often linked to underlying imbalances in gut health, hormones, or nutritional habits that we work on uncovering together.

  • Yes, nutrition can play a significant role in supporting mood and emotional wellbeing. While nutrition isn’t the only factor in mental health, many of my clients notice that targeted dietary changes, improving gut balance, and correcting nutrient deficiencies help reduce anxiety and lift mood.
